Hi! Thanks for the interview offer! I, (Eric Vocals/Guitar) answered the questions. If you'd like graphics (picture, logo, etc...) to go with this just let us know where to send them.
1. What has the last year been Derelict?
The last year has been really intense. We produced our new album, Unspoken Words, from January to August 2008 and toured Canada for a month during that time as well. Looking back booking a tour in the middle of recording an album was insane, but we lived through it and both the tour and album turned out great.
2. What makes Derelict different than other bands?
From what we’ve observed touring, a lot of newer bands emulate one or two of their favorite influences, to the point where you can almost say pick apart how they write their songs.
We just try to throw in influences from every style of metal we listen to, and incorporate other music as well, like jazz and reggae and classical.
3 What's the most fun about touring?
Seeing most of our vast country was amazing. Meeting new people and making friends was great too. Learning about the world by being in different parts of it…
But most of all, the feeling of driving into an unknown town as an unknown band and pulverizing people with our brand of metal, that’s what makes it worth it.
4 Describe what it feels like to perform on stage?
Freedom. Truth. Exaltation. It’s the one place in the world where I can be 100% myself with no socially constructed barriers to make me feel ashamed.
There’s definitely a feeling of power there too.
But then again sometimes it sucks, if the equipment is bad or there’s no one at the venue. It can really be one of two extremes.
5 What do you want people to remember after going to see you perform live?
That we went all out for them no matter how many people were there. Also that our music and performance was uncompromising, and hopefully that we stood out from the other bands there. That’s what we aim for at least…
6 How would you describe your sound?
In this world of labeling things, we’ve chosen “Progressive Death Metal” as a suitable tag. At the base we’re death metal, but we throw in a lot of other stuff so we added the progressive tag there too.
If you want to get into details, we play with 7-string guitars and 6-string basses, so the tuning is low and brutal. My vocals are mostly high range screams and Daryl complements with low range growls. Jordan is just an insane hurricane of drumming, he always comes up with a strange beat that remains brutal and carries the song.
7 What has been the biggest obstacle?
Time and money. That’s usually the case for any band in metal. You can’t make much money playing this style of music, so you need to work to live, but it also costs a fortune to run a band. It’s a vicious cycle. Hopefully with the new album we’ll sell more copies and perhaps cover some of our costs.
I used to think that the music industry slump wouldn’t affect metal, but several different musicians on bigger metal labels have told us not to get signed, to just do it indie. Who knows, hopefully kids will start buying albums again…
8. What motivates Derelict?
Making music and having an outlet to get it to people. There’s nothing like seeing someone enjoy something you created, it’s truly amazing.
9. What are the bands future plans?
We’re going to promote the hell out of our new album, Unspoken Words. We’re aiming to do several small stints through Quebec and Ontario this Fall and Winter, and we’re touring Canada coast to coast in May 2009. After that, we’ll see where we are. We’re slowly working on new music individually, so maybe by next Summer we’ll write a new album. Then the cycle begins again!
10. Where can people go to listen to you?
